Join us in welcoming Ashley, a new Weddings Unveiled blogger. We’re excited to have her on board!
1. Backyard weddings
Couples are trading in renting huge, spectacular venues in exchange for a simple ceremony in their backyard. This trend can be traced back to the recent celebrity weddings of Khloe Kardashian and Kendra Wilkinson, both of whom tied the knot in a beautiful back-garden ceremony. This is an option that’s great for a low budget wedding that also adds a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere.
2. Freedom of style choice for bridesmaids
It’s no longer ‘in’ to have the traditional matching bridesmaids dresses as brides have finally realized that not every cut suits every body type. Bridesmaids are now given a color and can choose any style they want from halter, strapless, cocktail, bubble skirt, aline to floor-length. This keeps them happy by allowing them to choose a cut that makes them feel fabulous for the big day.
3 . Bridal accessories
This is a popular trend of 2009 that looks like it’s sticking around for another year. Brides are ditching the simple look and donning themselves with tiaras, chunky necklaces, and sashes.
Hair ornaments–made popular by Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City–are especially in. Unlike Carrie, most brides won’t be so bold as to sport a big bird on their head, but they will be adding personal touches to their wedding gowns and updo.
4. Comfort foods
Instead of picking at their food, guests will delve in to scrumptious, filing dishes this year. Think pizza, burgers, and pasta with a lavish twist. These dishes create a lighthearted and comfortable atmosphere, putting everyone in a relaxed mood. Comfort foods are also more generally liked by everyone, and are more filling then upscale entrees, leaving guests full and ready to celebrate all night.
5. Sharing the wedding through social media
The year 2010 has already seen Facebook and Twitter become a big part of wedding plans, and brides and grooms will continue to update their statuses and tweet about their nuptials this year. It’s not uncommon to receive a Facebook invite to a friend’s wedding well before seeing the formal invitation in your mailbox. This is a great way to keep guests updated on the details of the event, but some see it as untraditional and impersonal.
6. Personalization
Having the bride and groom’s names on the wedding cake and favors adds a personal touch to certain elements that can otherwise be generic. If someone takes a snapshot of the cake and ‘Ann and Spencer’ are plastered across its tiers, there will be no mistaking whose wedding they were at that day.
7. Cover bands
So far in 2010, cover bands have been replacing the traditional DJ or wedding band. This is most popular among die-hard fans that want to enjoy the best day of their life alongside their favorite band. Hiring a cover band makes the day more suited to the couple’s taste and also much more memorable for the guests.
8. Candid photography
Although there will always be staged, formal photos, couples are now introducing a trend of candid or humorous photography that better captures the wedding party. This can include props like funny sunglasses or costumes to help set the mood. The candid part of the photo session will make the nervous wedding party more relaxed and make something really memorable to look back on.
9 . Pre-dinner entertainment
It’s becoming a popular trend this year to hire magicians while the guests wait for the food to be served. The guests won’t feel like they’re waiting for the party to start, because to them it’s already begun! Some other fun options are musicians, caricatures, or palm readers.
10 . Edible wedding favors
Couples are choosing to give more creative and useful gifts such as homemade cookies or candy apples as an extension of their gratitude to their guests for helping them celebrate their special day. Not only is this option cheap and cheerful, it’s also another trend that adds a personal touch to the big day. It’s also practical and can be enjoyed by the guests whenever they want.
